Are Strawberries Safe for Dogs to Eat?

I don’t know about you, but I like to spend my summers munching on as much fruit as humanly possible. I especially love eating my weight in strawberries.

However, when I’m gorging on the delicious fruit, my furry friend gives me her very best puppy dog eyes, making it very difficult not to share. Thankfully for her, strawberries are safe to give to canine companions.

While speaking to Forbes in October 2023, Dr. Jennifer Power, D.V.M. reminded pet parents to only give the fruit “in moderation.” This is especially true if your furry friend has never had a strawberry before.

“The high sugar content in strawberries can cause digestive upset and diarrhea in some dogs,” said Dr. Power.

She also told the publication that strawberries are actually a pretty healthy treat for dogs!

“They are a safe and healthy treat for most dogs due to their low-calorie and high-nutrient content,” said the vet during the interview.

That being said, you should always check with your vet before introducing any new foods to your dog’s diet – including strawberries!
